Abstract

There is a deeply rooted linguistic relationship between Turkish and Arabic, and it is well-known that the Arabic language has significantly influenced the Turkish language. Although the influence of Turkish on Arabic has not been as extensive, it has left clear marks on Arabic dialects, particularly the Mosul dialect. This can be attributed to the long period during which the Ottomans ruled the city of Mosul, leaving a significant impact on the daily lives of its people, including their language. Through this study, the influence of the Turkish language on the Mosul dialect has been highlighted. The Mosul dialect has incorporated many Turkish words and expressions that have become part of the daily speech of the city's inhabitants. This influence became more pronounced during the period of Turkification policies implemented by the Ottomans, where learning Turkish became mandatory in schools, and Turkish was the official language of education. Additionally, trade relations between Mosul and neighboring Turkish regions further reinforced this influence

In this study, examples of Turkish terms and expressions that have entered the Mosul dialect were examined, along with proverbs that reflect this influence. The study demonstrates that the Turkish language has left a noticeable impact on the everyday speech of the people of Mosul, reflecting the depth of cultural and historical ties between the two regions..
